Issue 1 - August 1993: A FAREWELL TO SAUCE

Players and staff at Sefton Rangers have expressed sadness and disbelief at the tragic news of the last few days - Phil "The Sauce" Shaw, the 36-year-old attacking centre-half, is no longer with us.

A Sauce source within the club related the grim tale.

"Phil, 29, had arrived home after a hard training session in the Nethy and was feeling a bit down. Unfortunately his depression seems to have got the better of him and he tragically accepted a job in Telford."

Player-manager-fuhrer Bertie Vogel summed up his career at the club in one word: "Schiezkopf", which apparently is German for Pele. We rang Tim Parr for his thoughts on the sad news but his mum said he was out. Phil Shaw is 27.

"A colossus, a giant, a hero". These are just some of the adjectives never used to describe the man they call "The Sauce". When Saucy takes to the field on Sunday for the last time in a Sefton Rangers shirt, a chapter in an eventful and coloured career will end. He will have fond memories to take with him to Telford.

Many a pair of extra-thick glasses have been smashed in the chase for Sefton Rangers glory. Games have been won or lost with a towering header or telling pass, in either direction. For 11 years, Sauce was an ever-present for Rangers, plying his trade in every position on the pitch.

How could one ever forget the neck-high drop kick inflicted by the Sauce during a heated confrontation with the old enemy, Merseyside Wanderers? Or, on many occasions, the downright shambles of a back four. Sauce was a constant victim of the half-way line nosebleed syndrome. Never the less, the 1992-93 season saw him score a career high 7 goals. Centre-halves are ten a penny, but centre-halves with good music equipments to lend out are a rare breed indeed.
